Dear Doctor Friend and/or Colleague...

While our patients come to us hoping for a listening ear and giving heart, I believe that what we think in the process of caring for them is just as valuable. Their hope is for health and life, ease of pain often. How we process their stories as we live our own lives, helps to add perspective and something organic to these interactions. We don’t regularly have time to share our own stories with patients, as production pressures and heavy caseloads leave no time for pontificating.

This is where I give you space to open up to those families we care for. You have been and are working hard to care for them, yourself, and your families. I recall various patients and families often in my work, and even during times in life that have nothing to do with clinical care. The scared father on the way to an emergency C-section, the intoxicated patient rolling into the O.R. after receive a little pre-op sedation. The humanity required of the work we do shows up in our behaviors, choices, and interactions. I would be honored if you would add to the growing patient education outreach with Caring 4 Us Corp. Write a post about a particular patient story that has stuck with you. Maybe you educated a family in a way that changed their views on their care or maybe a family or patient changed you.

Our roles in the journey of the patient can be profound or go completely unnoticed. Just the same, your role was necessary and had an impact. Patients need the stories of their care providers. Many feel we don't really care and just want paychecks and big houses. I and you know this is not true. They become just as much a part of our story as we become a part of theirs.
